Your Township Tax CalculatorThis issue summarized by David Read, September 2008. In Scio Township, the local taxes are paid to the Township Treasurer. However, the Township keeps only a small portion of the money it collects – about $46 out of every $1,000. The rest is sent on to other jurisdictions, such as Washtenaw County, your local school system, your local library, etc. The chart below shows the various components of the local taxes. This chart is for the 2007 – 2008 fiscal year, the last year for which we have complete information. In order to determine your taxes, you need to know the Taxable Value of your home (TV) and the school district in which your home is located. For ease of conversion, the chart uses $100,000 as the TV. If your home is valued at $145,000 for example, you would simply multiply the tax amount by 1.45 (the tax for such a home located in the Dexter school district would be $4,486.52 or 1.45 X $3,094.15).
As you can see from the chart, Scio Township retains only $144.60 of the $3094.15 collected for a home with a TV of $100,000. Of that $144.60, the Township is required to set aside $49.42 for land preservation leaving $95.18 for the General Fund. In the 2007/2008 Fiscal Year, the budget for the General Fund was $2,978,770 of which your portion was $95.18.
